Simple Minds star dies as tributes pour in for band member

Musician Andy Gillespie was a founding member of the band, helping write songs including "Don't You (Forget About Me)"

The Simple Minds star, Andy Gillespie, has died at the age of 66.

The drummer was a founding member of the band, which was formed in Glasgow in 1977.

Gillespie helped write some of the group's biggest hits, including "Don't You (Forget About Me)", which featured in the 1985 film "The Breakfast Club".

The band said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved band member and dear friend Andy Gillespie. Andy was an integral part of Simple Minds from the very beginning, and his drumming provided the solid backbone to our sound.

He was a talented musician, a loyal friend, and a true original. He will be greatly missed."

Tributes have been paid to Gillespie from across the music world, including from former Simple Minds guitarist, Charlie Burchill.

Burchill said: "Andy was a great drummer and a good friend. We had some great times together and I will never forget him. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

Gillespie's death is a huge loss to the music world. He was a talented musician and a key member of one of the most successful bands of the 1980s.

He will be sadly missed by his fans and friends.
